Best AI Image Upscalers Compared

AI upscalers enlarge small photos, AI art and scans while adding believable detail. We compare seven popular tools by price, free plan, maximum enlargement and output size, and whether they run on your computer or in the cloud.

Last updated: · prices checked

At a glance

Upscalers differ in two ways that matter more than marketing claims. First, faithful vs creative: tools like Topaz Gigapixel, Upscayl and Photoshop try to keep the picture as it is, while Magnific and Krea invent new detail, which looks impressive on AI art but can change faces and text. Second, local vs cloud: desktop apps need a decent graphics card but have no per-image cost, cloud services work on any device but use credits.

The short version: Topaz Gigapixel for professional photo work; Upscayl if you have a GPU and want it free; Let's Enhance for very large print files in the browser; Magnific or Krea for creative AI art; Bigjpg for anime on a budget; and our free AI upscaler for a few images a day without an account.

Topaz Gigapixel

Best for: professional photo upscaling

Topaz Labs' Gigapixel is the best-known photo upscaler. It is now sold only as a subscription: Gigapixel alone costs $29 per month or $149 per year, Gigapixel Pro $499 per year, and the Topaz Studio bundle with all apps $399 per year (discounted in the first term). A web version for images starts at $12 per month. Perpetual licenses are no longer sold.

Gigapixel runs locally on Windows and macOS with unlimited images, which needs a capable graphics card, and also offers cloud rendering. Topaz states enlargements up to 6x. The basic plan allows only limited commercial use.

Pros

  • Very natural detail, also on faces
  • Runs locally with unlimited images
  • Batch processing

Cons

  • Subscription only, no perpetual license any more
  • Needs a strong GPU
  • Limited commercial use in the basic plan

Let's Enhance

Best for: very large print files in the browser

Let's Enhance is a browser service built for print: the Starter plan ($9 per month billed yearly, $12 monthly) includes 100 credits and outputs up to 256 MP, while Pro ($24/$32) and Max ($34/$45) raise both. New accounts get 10 free credits, but free results carry a watermark and are limited to 8 MP.

It supports batch processing, and businesses can use an API. Because it is cloud-only, images are uploaded for processing.

Pros

  • Huge output sizes for posters and print
  • Batch processing and API
  • Nothing to install

Cons

  • Cloud only
  • Free results watermarked and limited to 8 MP
  • Credits are capped per month

Upscayl

Best for: free, unlimited upscaling on your own computer

Upscayl is an open-source desktop app (AGPL-3.0) for Windows, macOS and Linux. It is completely free with no limits, and because it runs locally your images never leave your computer. You can add your own models. An optional paid cloud service exists for people without a suitable graphics card.

It needs a GPU that supports Vulkan; many integrated laptop GPUs do not work well. Results are faithful rather than creative, with less invented detail than Topaz or Magnific.

Pros

  • Free and open source, no limits
  • Private: runs locally
  • Custom models possible

Cons

  • Needs a Vulkan-capable GPU
  • Less fine detail than the paid leaders
  • No official mobile app

Adobe Photoshop

Best for: people who already pay for Photoshop

Photoshop offers two ways to upscale. Super Resolution in Camera Raw doubles width and height (four times the pixels) and runs locally. The newer Generative Upscale runs in the cloud, enlarges 2x or 4x and can use Adobe Firefly or Topaz models, consuming generative credits; Photoshop includes 25 such credits per month.

Adobe's plans page did not show us a US-dollar price on the check date, so please check it there. If you do not already use Photoshop, a dedicated upscaler is cheaper.

Pros

  • Integrated into a full editing workflow
  • Local Super Resolution plus Topaz models via Generative Upscale

Cons

  • Expensive if you only need upscaling
  • Generative Upscale uses credits
  • Lower maximum enlargement

Magnific

Best for: creative upscaling of AI art

Magnific became famous for “creative” upscaling that invents new texture and detail, which suits AI-generated art and illustrations. It now belongs to Freepik and is sold as a credit-based plan bundling many AI models; on the check date the pricing page showed us euro prices from €12 per month on a yearly plan. Enlargements go up to 16x.

The creative approach can change faces, text and small details, so it is less suitable when the result must stay true to the original.

Pros

  • Most impressive results on AI art
  • Up to 16x

Cons

  • Can alter faces and details
  • Credit system hard to compare
  • No clear US-dollar pricing on the official page

Krea

Best for: a generous free tier and very large outputs

Krea is an AI image suite with an enhancer/upscaler. The free plan refills compute units every day and upscales up to 2K. Paid plans (on the check date $5, $21 and $63 per month as promotional prices) raise the output to 22K pixels and include several models, among them a Topaz model.

It is a generator suite rather than a dedicated upscaler, and unused units expire each month.

Pros

  • Free tier refills daily
  • Up to 22K output, several models

Cons

  • Free output limited to 2K
  • Units expire monthly
  • More of a generator suite than an upscaler

Bigjpg (waifu2x)

Best for: anime and illustrations on a tiny budget

Bigjpg is based on waifu2x, a model designed for anime and drawn art. The free plan allows 20 images per month, uploads up to 5 MB and 4x enlargement. Paid plans are cheap: $6 for two months, $12 for six months or $22 for a year, with up to 16x and 50 MB uploads. The original waifu2x is also free and open source.

For photographs the older technology is clearly weaker than modern upscalers.

Pros

  • Very cheap paid plans
  • Excellent for anime and line art

Cons

  • Weak on photos
  • Free plan is slow
  • Older technology

ToolLaunchpad AI Image Upscaler

Best for: a few free upscales a day without an account

Our free AI image upscaler enlarges photos and illustrations 2x, 4x or 8x with no account, no credit card and no watermark. Everyone gets five upscales per day. Images are processed on our own server and deleted automatically after 24 hours.

Pros

  • Free, no account, no watermark
  • Several models and sizes
  • Images deleted after 24 hours

Cons

  • 5 images per day
  • Images are uploaded to our server

How to choose an upscaler

  • Photos of people: choose a faithful upscaler (Topaz, Upscayl, Photoshop). Creative tools may change faces.
  • AI art and illustrations: creative tools (Magnific, Krea) or anime-focused ones (Bigjpg) often look best.
  • Printing: check the maximum output. A 60 × 90 cm poster at 150 dpi needs about 3540 × 5315 pixels, roughly 19 MP.
  • Privacy: local apps keep images on your computer; cloud services upload them.
  • How often? For a few images a month, credits or free tiers are cheaper than a subscription.

Realistic expectations

No upscaler can recover detail that was never captured. AI models guess plausible detail from what they have learned; with very small or blurry sources the result may look sharp but differ from reality. For documents and text, a higher-resolution scan is always better than upscaling.

How we compared

We did not run our own lab benchmarks and we do not publish made-up test scores. This comparison is based on the vendors' official pricing and feature pages, their documentation and published independent audits, all read on the date above. Prices change often and can differ by country, tax and promotion: always check the final price on the vendor's site.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI image upscaler?

Upscayl if you have a suitable graphics card, because it is free and unlimited on your own computer. Without a GPU, Krea's daily free tier or our free upscaler (5 images per day, no account) are good options.

Is Topaz Gigapixel still a one-time purchase?

No. On the check date Topaz Labs sold Gigapixel only as a subscription, from $29 per month or $149 per year.

How much can AI upscale an image?

Typical tools offer 2x to 4x; Topaz states up to 6x, and Magnific, Upscayl and Bigjpg up to 16x. Very large factors add invented detail rather than real information.

Do AI upscalers change the image?

Faithful upscalers keep the content and add sharpness. Creative upscalers such as Magnific invent new detail, which can change faces, text and small objects.

Can I upscale images for printing?

Yes. Let's Enhance and Topaz handle very large print sizes. Work out the pixels you need from the print size and dpi first.

How current are these prices?

We read the prices on the official pages on the date shown at the top. Some pages showed us euro prices only; prices in your country may differ.
